CBD as antibiotic - does cannabidiol help against bacterial infections?

inflammation or respiratory tract infection - almost every patient had to take antibiotics once in a lifetime to get rid of the condition. However, with growing coverage of resistant bacteria, fewer and fewer people trust the chemical drugs without reservation; many are looking for alternatives. If natural products such as e.g. CBD oil actually help here? What causes an antibiotic? The term antibiotics is composed of the Greek terms "anti" and "bios" and means something like: against life. Originally it referred to as bacteria-expelled metabolites that inhibit the growth of other microorganisms in their environment. In modern medicine, all partially and fully synthetic substances that kill bacteria and inhibit their multiplication as an antibiotic apply. Problems with antibiotics - do natural ingredients have benefits? The biggest problem with using synthetic antibiotics is that certain strains of bacteria become insensitive to them over time and a drug loses its effect. Not only the frequent prescription of antibiotics promotes the resistance, but also their industrial use. In the animal fattening producers want to prevent infectious diseases by large-scale Antibiotikagaben, but thereby risk residues in their products. These in turn can lead to the formation of resistant bacterial strains in the consumer. Researchers are increasingly testing natural antibacterial substances such as oregano oil, garlic extracts or honey as part of their search for drug candidates for resistant bacteria. Here is the thesis that natural substances are too complex for bacteria to resist. In the course of this, CBD will also be interesting for research: Does CBD have antibiotic properties?Researchers already demonstrated that cannabidiol has an antibacterial effect on streptococci and staphylococci in the 1970s. [1] At that time it was concluded from the results that this effect applies only to gram-positive bacteria, whereas gram-negative bacteria are resistant to CBD. Other data was presented by the research team led by Mark Blaskovich at this year's American Society for Microbiology conference, ASM Microbe in San Francisco. According to Blaskovich, the previously unpublished study shows how CBD eliminated bacterial strains that are already resistant to common antibiotics. In addition, no resistance to cannabidiol developed in the bacteria even after exposure to the cannabinoid for about 20 days. According to the scientists, CBD demonstrated efficacy against MRSA, the methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which is responsible for serious hospital infections. Lead chemist Mark Blaskovich, in an interview with Newsweek, explained the current state of knowledge on CBD as an antibiotic: "We do not yet know how it works, but it could have a unique mechanism if confirmed to work against antibiotic-resistant bacteria." Can CBD increase the effects of antibiotics? In a study published in 2019, researchers demonstrated in a study published in 2019 how CBD could influence resistant bacteria: experts call materials that release bacteria via their outer sheath as outer membrane vesicles. They primarily serve the communication of the bacteria with each other, but also the exchange of DNA, the formation of a biofilm and the release of defense enzymes against immune cells. Cannabidiol can effectively inhibit these membrane vesicles, particularly in the bacterium E. coli. As a result, various antibiotics in combination with CBD were more effective against certain Gram-negative bacteria. According to the authors, CBD may help reduce resistance to antibiotics.  Source: CBD als Antibiotikum – hilft Cannabidiol gegen bakterielle Infektionen? 1 [online]. 23 Oct, 2018.
